Brussels, September 9, 2008
Today, following on the success of last year’s First Black Women’s Council Congress in Europe, AFRA- The International Center for Black Women’s Perspectives (Austria) in cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee, hosted a High Level Roundtable Discussion making the official launch of the Black European Women’s Council –BEWC on the “Role of Black Women in an all inclusive Europe, challenges faced by Black European Communities.”

Coorganiser is Tiye International (The Netherlands)

The meeting took place today, September 9, at the premises of the European Economic and Social Committee, in Brussels. The conference was facilitated by Brenda King, President of the specialised section in Employment, Social Affairs and Citizenship (SOC) of the Brussels-based European Economic and Social Committee.

AFRA- International Center for Black Women’s Perspectives and Tiye International, in cooperation with the European Economic and Social Committee have the pleasure to invite you to the High Level Roundtable Discussion on the “Role of Black Women in an all inclusive Europe, challenges faced by Black Communties in Europe” and the closing reception marking the official launching of the Black European Women’s Council- BEWC

on Tuesday 9th September from 1.30 pm - 5 pm
at the premisses of the European Economic and Social Committee,
Rue Van Maerlant 2, 1040 Brussels.


BEWC
is an international, non-profit body to represent the concerns, needs, interests and empowerment of Black European Women.
The Association will act as an initiator, creating a platform for dialogue with national, European and international institutions.

BEWC was founded at the “1st Black European Women’s Congress” (September 26-29, 2007), initiated by Beatrice Achaleke (AFRA – International Center for Black Women’s Perspectives Austria, www.blackwomencenter.org) and co-organised by Tiye International, The Netherlands, in the framework of the European Year for Equal Opportunities for All. The 1st Black European Women’s Congress braught together 100 Women from 16 EU-Members States, Switzerland and USA. More information about BEWC on www.bewnet.eu.

Facilitated by Brenda King, President of the Section for Employment, Social Affairs and Citizenship of the European Economic and Social Comittee (EESC) the official launching of BEWC is taking place in the framework of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, also supported by MEP Christa Prets, Committee on the Rights of Women and Gender Equality of the European Parliament.

The launching of the BEWC is funded by  Filia diefrauenstiftung- Germany,  European Programm for the Citizens and the Austrian Federal Chancellery, Ministry for Women.
