Request of a PICUM member: How to talk with undocumented migrants about the future?

01.09.2010 “We are a network (called FOYER) of grassroots organizations in Brussels. Our target group are undocumented migrants. The majority of these migrants left their country to seek a better future in Europe. They try to survive in the capital. The living conditions are often not at all what they expected. They face multiple problems: housing, medical care, food, money, ... The chance that will they ever get residence papers in Belgium is very small. We want to help them to find or to reflect upon a new meaningful perspective, around which they can begin to (re)build their lives. We want to talk realistically about different options: legal residence, illegal residence, migration to another country, returning home... But we find it very difficult to start these kind of conversations. Does anyone have experiences with this kind of work? Do studies exist? Gaining insight in your experiences would be very helpful for our project. You can contact us by mail:

Making Migration Work for Development

01.09.2010 What? Making Migration Work for Development - Kick-off Conference When?
15 September 2010 | 12.30-14.00 (lunch provided) Where? EP | Altierro Spinelli Building | Room A5G315

Even before the economic crisis exploded, half of the world’s workforce was living on less than 2USD per day. 80% of the world population was lacking social security coverage and informal employment was spreading. Deficits in decent work and aspirations for a decent life are part of the driving forces of international migration, with 90% of the world’s migrants (estimated at 191 million in 2005) being workers and their families in search of employment. With this conference, SOLIDAR and the Global Progressive Forum will launch a three-year project to mobilise support from European citizens and politicians for a rights-based-approach to labour migration and decent work (in line with the relevant UN and ILO conventions) and for policy coherence for development. The debate will address the challenges that face migrant workers in the EU and how improved EU policies can ensure that migrants contribute best to economic and social development in both the hosting and sending countries.
