21.04.2011 A guide for dealing with diversity and equal opportunities in Austrian companies – it shows the challenges of diversity for business and identifies ways to address these. In a first step terms are explained and defined, such as accessibility, recognition of diversity, establishing equal opportunities. Then the guide focuses on motivation to deal with these subjects and introduce diversity management as a principle in companies or organizations. The main part of the guide is devoted to the practical implementation of the diversity management process, with examples of concrete action.

European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) seminar: Improving Member States Asylum Systems and Defining Good Practices

21.04.2011 The seminar will provide an overview of interview techniques, in particular the do’s and don’ts of interviewing asylum seekers, including vulnerable groups. The seminar will also look into the growing role of the Court of Justice by analysing both its competences in interpreting EU secondary legislation as well as providing an overview of the Court’s judgments in relation to the Qualifications Directive. Furthermore, it will look at examples of best practices in certain Member States that involve medical, psychological and legal assistance as well as alternatives to detention for families with children. The seminar will be held on 19-20 May 2011 in Maastricht. The registration form should be submitted before 29 April 2011.

First Comprehensive Guide to European Non-discrimination Law Launched

21.04.2011 The first comprehensive guide to European non-discrimination law was launched and published by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on 21 March, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The Handbook on European Non-Discrimination Law is the first comprehensive guide to European non-discrimination law. It is based on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice. It covers: the context and background to European non-discrimination law (including the UN human rights treaties), discrimination categories and defences, the scope of the law (including who is protected) and the grounds protected, such as sex, disability, age, race and nationality.

New Mrci Report On Ethnic Profiling In Ireland

21.04.2011 A new report by the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) has highlighted that ethnic profiling, a form of racial discrimination, is being facilitated by the Irish state. The report ‘Singled Out’ is an exploratory study on ethnic profiling in Ireland. It gives shocking insights to the treatment of Black and ethnic minority communities travelling to and from Northern Ireland and in police/immigration/security checks in the Republic.

ERRC Publication: "mperfect Justice: Anti-Roma Violence and Impunity"

21.04.2011 ERRC monitoring of the State response to 44 selected cases of anti-Roma violence in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia shows that many Romani victims of violent crimes do not secure justice. A limited number of perpetrators of violent attacks against Roma are successfully identified, investigated and prosecuted. The failure of law enforcement authorities to identify the perpetrators of crimes against Roma or to recognise racial motivation in a considerable number of investigations creates a climate of impunity and may encourage further acts of violence against Roma. Clear and effective guidance in addressing hate crimes is absent in the countries of this study.
